What Homeowners Should Know Before Starting
Set Your Budget Before You Fall in Love With Materials
The most common source of stress in a kitchen renovation is budget creep. It starts with falling in love with a countertop that costs three times what you planned, and suddenly every other line item gets squeezed. Set a firm total budget first, then allocate percentages: roughly 35 percent for cabinetry, 15 percent for countertops, 10 percent for flooring, 10 percent for appliances, and the remainder for plumbing, electrical, backsplash, lighting, and labour. Keep 10 to 15 percent in reserve for surprises.
Live With Your Kitchen Before Redesigning It
Before changing anything, spend a week paying close attention to how you move through the space. Where do you set things down? What cabinet do you open most? Where do traffic jams happen when two people are cooking? These observations should drive the new layout. A kitchen that looks great in a rendering but ignores your actual habits will frustrate you daily.
Appliance Decisions Come First
This might seem counterintuitive, but appliance dimensions dictate cabinet layout. A 36-inch range needs a different cabinet arrangement than a 30-inch range. A counter-depth refrigerator changes how much aisle space you have. Select your appliances early in the design phase so cabinets and countertops are built around them, not the other way around.
Expect to Lose Your Kitchen for 4 to 8 Weeks
A full kitchen renovation is not a weekend project. Once demolition starts, the space is unusable until the final install is complete. Plan a temporary kitchen setup: a folding table, a microwave, a kettle, and a mini-fridge in another room will keep you functional. Meal prepping and freezing food before demo day also helps.
Hardware and Fixtures Are the Finishing Touch
Cabinet hardware, faucets, and light fixtures are the details that tie a kitchen together. Choose a finish family (matte black, brushed gold, brushed nickel) and stick with it across the room. Mixing metals can work in larger kitchens with distinct zones, but in most spaces, consistency looks more intentional.
For hardware, test the pull or knob in your hand before committing. You will touch these dozens of times a day. Comfort matters as much as appearance. A 5-inch cabinet pull is standard for drawers, while 3 to 4 inches works well for doors.
Ventilation Is Often Overlooked
A range hood is not just a decorative element — it removes smoke, grease, and cooking odours from your kitchen. For gas ranges, a vented hood exhausting to the outside is strongly recommended. For electric ranges, a recirculating hood with charcoal filters works in situations where ductwork is not feasible, though it is less effective. Size the hood to match or exceed the width of your cooktop for proper coverage.
