Living Room Design Winnipeg: A Custom Mantle and Calm Evenings
We refreshed this Winnipeg living room with a custom mantle, a quieter ceiling, new flooring, and a fireplace wall that finally works for everyday evenings.

This main-floor living room needed to feel like home again without asking the family to move. The brief mixed design, staging, and renovation: remove the stipple ceiling, rethink the fireplace wall, settle new flooring, and make space for a television without fighting the architecture. We led the design and coordinated the build with Task Reno, with flooring supplied through River Park Flooring.
A living room carries the evenings of a house. When the fireplace wall fights the screen, or the ceiling presses down, people stop lingering. Our work here was to make staying in the room feel easy again.

A fireplace wall that works for real evenings
The original fireplace wall had a high window crowding the mantle and a stipple ceiling pressing the room down. We designed a custom modern mantle and covered the high window so the wall could hold a television cleanly. The finished wall reads as one calm composition: fireplace, mantle, screen, and storage in line instead of in competition.
Sightlines mattered as much as the millwork. From the seating, the screen now sits at a comfortable height without blocking the fireplace, and the mantle keeps its role as the anchor of the room. Nothing about the wall is decorative only. Every element earns its place. Cable management, mounting height, and the proportion of the mantle shelf were planned together so the wall would still look intentional with the television off.
We wanted evenings to feel settled: a fire if someone wants it, a show if someone else does, and seating that faces the wall without anyone craning their neck. That is the practical test of a fireplace and television wall. If the family has to choose between comfort and composition, the design is not finished.
Ceiling, flooring, and the details that settle a room
Fresh paint and new crown brought the proportions back into balance once the stipple ceiling was gone. Soft carpet underfoot replaced the old surface, and updated lighting finished the room so it feels settled rather than temporary. The opposite side of the room got the same care: paint, lighting, flooring, and demolition where it mattered.
Removing stipple is more than a surface change. It alters how tall the room feels and how light moves across it. With a quieter ceiling plane and cleaner crown, the custom mantle and fireplace can read as architecture instead of competing with texture overhead. The flooring through River Park Flooring softens footfall and warms the palette so the room invites bare feet and long conversations, not just quick passes through to the kitchen.

We staged the finished seating lightly so the photographs show how the room lives, not a showroom set. A few pillows, a simple tray on the coffee table, and clear paths to the fireplace keep the focus on the architecture we rebuilt. That is interior design first, with just enough styling for the room to feel ready for company.
The entry that ties the main floor together
Our clients did not need a new address. They needed a living room they could love in place. At the front door, we refreshed the glass and hardware so the first impression matches the rooms inside. It is a small move, and it ties the main-floor story together from the moment the door opens.
When the entry and living room share a quieter finish language, guests feel the intention before they sit down. Hardware that feels considered, glass that lets light in, and a path that leads the eye toward the fireplace wall all reinforce the same idea: this house is cared for, and the evenings here are meant to be comfortable.
